Most Australians are happy drinking tap water because it’s still considered “safe” compared to the rest of the world. I’m grateful that we have access to drinking water that won’t send you to the bathroom (I was going to write “free of contaminants” but that’s not true which I’ll explain in a moment). Tap water although potable is not safe. Here’s tap water and alkaline water compared.
Is Fluoride in Tap Water Safe?
I admit, if you compare tap water in Australia compared to tap water around the world, the water quality is good. It’s devastating to know that approximately 3.5 million people die each year due to inadequate water supply, sanitation and hygieneˆ. We’re fortunate in Australia to be able to drink from the tap and not fall ill..well not immediately. You see, although you can drink tap water, there’s a difference between potable water and healthy water. That’s the difference between merely surviving, and thriving.
It’s no secret that Sydney tap water contains fluoride. Many argue that fluoride helps you maintain healthy teeth. But the fact is, fluoride is a toxic waste – a known neurotoxin that causes brain damage and lowers IQ¹. Fluoride has been dubbed the silent killer² and although won’t happen overnight, it will happen. Dentist Dr Ron Ehrlich states that “the only benefit that comes from using fluoride is when it is applied sparingly and topically to the tooth itself. As a result, I believe the issue of water fluoridation needs to be addressed”. Furthermore he argues “there is not a single biological process within the human body that requires fluoride. It is not an essential mineral, it is a medication and should be treated accordingly”°.
Is Chlorine in Tap Water Safe?
The other issue with tap water is it contains chlorine. While it may be helpful in killing microorganisms, ingesting it every day is a bad idea. According to the U.S. Council of Environmental Quality, the cancer risk to people who drink chlorinated water is 93 per cent higher than those whose water does not contain chlorine. What’s more concerning is that it produces disinfection byproducts which are 100 times more toxic than chlorine. Scientists have discovered that toxic chemical byproducts form when these disinfectants react with natural organic matter like decaying vegetation in the source water. The most common disinfectant byproducts formed when chlorine is used are trihalomethanes and haloacetic acids.³ They have caused cancer in animal tests. Two other studies have also concluded that lifetime consumption of chlorinated tap water can more than double the risk of bladder and rectal cancers.ˆ
How Alkaline Water Differs to Tap Water
I’ll only be comparing natural alkaline water to tap water. Alkaline water that is ionised (most are) is completely different and I’ll cover this in another post. Alkaline water is becoming increasingly popular among health enthusiasts as research is uncovering so many benefits such as treating acid reflux˜.
Natural alkaline water may contain chlorine and fluoride but these are naturally occurring. Adding an artificial chemical to water and finding it naturally is like comparing sea water to water with salt added to it. One is a natural source full of life, the other a synthetic concoction made to resemble what Mother Nature already perfected. Elaine Hollingsworth, author of “Take Control Of Your Health and Escape the Sickness Industry” states that natural fluoride is usually calcium fluoride while fluoride that is added to our water supply are silicofluorides which is 85 times more toxic. According to an article in The Weston A Price Foundation Magazine by Anita Shattuck, “they are non-biodegradable, hazardous wastes taken from the pollution scrubbers of industries. If not dumped in the public water supplies, these silicofluorides would have be neutralised at the highest rated hazardous waste facility at the cost of US$1.40 per gallon.
Creating a Disease Free Environment with Alkaline Water
More importantly alkaline water is effective in creating an alkaline environment that prevents the growth of disease and cancer. Dr Otto Warburg, a Nobel Peace Prize laureate discovered viruses, bacteria and fungus cannot live in an alkaline environment but thrive in an acidic one. This has a lot to do with the mineral composition. Alkaline waters contain higher amounts of alkaline minerals such as bicarbonate and calcium which acts as buffers against acid.
When your body becomes too acidic, you begins to exhibit symptoms of an imbalance. These start with little irritations like fatigue, headache, a skin breakout or poor digestion. But they lead to more serious illnesses if left untreated. Dr Pizzorno of the Integrative Medicine Journal explains that the idea that “being too acid” contributes to cancer, has been around for a long time. This concept was easily discounted by conventional medicine as quackery. However, since then, a growing body of research has documented not only that it’s a real phenomenon, but it’s now known to contribute to a wide range of diseases, such cancer, osteoporosis, kidney stones and new research is adding to the listº.
While you can survive on tap water, it puts a burden on your body to eliminate toxins such as fluoride and chlorine. Alkaline water nourishes your body and sets you up to thrive. Which one would you prefer?
